US$383m contract for next-gen submarine-launched ballistic missiles
• Lockheed Martin has secured a $383 million contract from the U.S. Navy to develop the next-generation Trident II D5 Life Extension 2 (D5LE2) missile.
• The contract will help secure America’s continued advancement in sea-based strategic weapon systems.
• The upgraded missile, called the Trident II D5 Life Extension 2 (D5LE2), will be carried aboard Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines to ensure the strategic weapon system remains credible through 2084.
• The new facility is expected to add approximately 300 highly-skilled new jobs to the area.
• The D5LE2 program modernized the submarine-launched ballistic missile while maintaining the proven performance of the D5 missile for significantly less than the cost of designing a new missile.
• Lockheed Martin will also build an approximately 225,000 square foot facility in Titusville, Florida to produce components for the D5LE2 submarine-launched ballistic missile.
• The new missile will be deployed on the next generation of deterrent submarines.
