Purpose and Scope:

Operate and maintain the AAAF growing options (such as greenhouse, hydroponic, hoop house, container, or garden/soil solutions) and maximize/optimize production of local produce to generate cost savings to Government and maintain/increase food quality on island. This position is in support of the Air Force Contract Augmentation Program (AFCAP) and is located at Ascension Island Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF).

Essential Responsibilities:

Operate and maintain the AAAF growing options (such as greenhouse, hydroponic, hoop house, container, or garden/soil solutions) and maximize/optimize production of local produce to generate cost savings to Government and maintain/increase food quality on island.
Comply with the AAAF Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan. This may require segregating organic waste from other wastes.
Use composting to the maximum extent possible to dispose of left-over food and compostable wares.

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Minimum of three years of proven gardening experience.
High school diploma or equivalent training & experience.
Ability to read and write English is required.
Solid communications skills, strong interpersonal skills.
Strong ability to work as a member of a diverse, dynamic team.
Outstanding problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
Must be a USN to fill this position.
Possess a valid driver’s license and passport.
Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain requirements for duration of deployment.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Able to stand for long periods of time such as eight to ten hours, bend, kneel, and reach to store/retrieve supplies.
Able to lift, carry, and push supplies and boxes up to 50 pounds.
Living and working conditions at the assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable.
Long hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions.
Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
